Specialist Groups - Road Warriors

First of all, what is a road warrior? If you travel a lot on business with a laptop, but use a desktop computer back at the office or at home, you are a road warrior! The remainder of this section is written especially with the road warrior in mind.

Don't you wish you had an easy way of making sure the document that you are currently working on is the latest version? You might also wish to have a more effective way of having a particular document on both your laptop and your home computer without having to email it to yourself or transfer it using your USB external drive. Well, you're in luck with SyncBackSE.

Let me create a more elaborate scenario for you. You go on a business trip and you have just copied all the required files from your work computer to your laptop so that you can work on them while you're away. During your trip, you managed to get a lot of work done. This means that some of the files were modified and new files were created. When you return back to the office, you start copying files to your office desktop computer from your laptop. However in the midst of it, you confuse yourself with which file is the latest and most up to date and start physically going through the documents to determine the latest version. Want an easier way of doing this? Read on...

With SyncBackSE, which is both a backup and synchronization program, you will be able to synchronize your laptop with your desktop computer easily using the Intelligent sync function. The initial step will require you to setup a profile to perform the synchronization by specifying the 2 folders to synchronize, more commonly known as the Left and Right folders in SyncBackSE. You will also be able to instruct SyncBackSE to synchronize either uni-directionally, which is either from the Left folder to the Right or Right to Left, or bi-directionally, which is from Left to Right and Right to Left. Once the profile is setup, you will be able to run the profile at anytime and can then ensure that the files that you're accessing are the most up-to-date ones.

You will find a tutorial on setting up a synchronization profile on our website

Backing up your files is also a very simple process with SyncBackSE. You will be able to backup to an external media like your USB thumb drive, or external hard disk. The idea is to keep your laptop separate from the external media that you make your backups to, so that in the case of an unforeseen mishap like a hard disk malfunction or theft, you can still retrieve your files from your external media while still on your business trip. An alternative solution would be to backup your files to an online storage service. There are some services that allow the user to add a virtual drive to your system and that drive is connected to the provider's FTP site. If the service provider's drive appears in your laptop's system drive list, then SyncBackSE can be used to perform backups directly from your laptop to the online backup service provider's drive. In this way you will be combining complete peace of mind and convenience, all in one step.

So, if you are a road warrior and need to combat the tedious task of synchronizing your computers and at the same time the fear of losing your valuable files, then SyncBackSE may be your ideal solution!

Staff Sparks

Hi, my name is Michael Leaver and I'm the technical director here at
2BrightSparks.

Like most people the majority of my day is spent sat in front of a computer answering emails and forum posts, writing code, reading documents, and occasionally playing Team Fortress 2. With so many programs running you often find that you don't have enough screen space for all those windows. Not so long ago most people would have used a single 17" (or smaller) CRT monitor. These days it's more common to have a 19" (or larger) LCD monitor, and often more than one monitor. I use two wide-screen 22" LCD monitors which gives me plenty of desktop space. Many times during the day I need to refer to one window (containing a document or web page, for example) while typing a reply in another (e. g. an email or forum post). I also use one monitor exclusively for certain programs, e. g. email, newsreader, etc. BDS 2006 (which we use to develop our software) has many windows so with two monitors you can spread things out making it less claustrophobic. Once you've used a system with more than one monitor it's very hard to go back to using a single screen system:

On a different note, most of the features in our software are there because people contact us to tell us what they want our software to do. There's little point in adding things that people don't want, so we really value customer suggestions and feedback. If you have a suggestion for a feature that you'd like (no matter how simple or complex), please feel free to use our contact form. We all read every form sent to us:

Tip of the Month by Richard Gascoigne

Clean Out the Garbage

In using SyncBackSE, of course I always use the same set of Destination folders on my backup drive. However, as I re-use them day after day they accumulate files that I have long since deleted on my computer. For example, when I download pictures from my camera they look like “IMG00001”. When I get a chance (maybe a few days later) I rename them according to the contents.

But now I have “IMG00001” AND the same picture, renamed “Bali2007” both backed up. I need a way to clean up such renamed / deleted files.

The solution is easy, but easy to miss, too. You will need to “Modify” the profile, and select the “Decisions – Files” option. Scroll down to the section labeled “What to do if the file exists on Destination but not on Source”. Select the option “Delete file from Destination”.

To be safe you might also specify some number of days that SyncBackSE will keep that file before actually deleting it. Since I do a weekly backup in addition to the daily backup, I use 7 days as the cut-off, because I will also have a copy on the weekly backup.

See our next Tip for how to find those duplicate files quickly and easily.

Do you have a novel use of our products? Send us your Tip, and if we use it you’ll get a nice surprise.
