multiple user accounts on android

Postby Knapdale » Fri Nov 25, 2016 5:04 pm

Hello,

How does Sync Back Pro/Sync Back Touch cope with multiple user accounts on an android system e.g. out family tablet with 4 user accounts. I don't understand how to 'see' files e.g. in DCIM folder from different user accounts.

Thank you,
Sarah

Hi,

Different users on Android devices are independent and isolated (sandboxed) from each other in term of running processes and storage, therefore each user needs to run its own instance of SyncBack Touch. In addition, each SyncBack Touch instance needs to be set up to use its own Device ID (e.g. MyDevice-User1, etc, this can set up under Menu > Settings > Security > Device ID) and listening port (this can set up under Menu > Settings > Network > SyncBack Touch port number). So the first user can keep the port at 8080, the second can use 8081 and so on.

You can set the SyncBack Touch service to run on device startup (under Menu > Settings > Misc. > Start service on device startup) so you don't need to run manually the service but keep in mind that you will still need to switch users in order to trigger the service startup which you may find cumbersome (the service will keep running though even you switch to another user later). Unfortunately the limitations imposed by the Android operating system doesn't give us much room to do things more effectively.

Additionaly, you can set SyncBackPro to use the same profile with multiple SyncBack Touch instances by enabling the "I want to use multiple SyncBack Touch devices" option in the profile and then a multi-profile grid will appear in which you can enter the names of each instance. SyncBackPro can automatically fill up the grid for you for every instance of SyncBack Touch that is already running on your local network (for all users) by pressing the Find button. For more information on Multiple profiles you can press F1 while you are in the grid editor (section Multi-Profile).

I hope the above can help.

Thanks,
Kostas
