Skipped 18, Errors 8

Post by needowelum »

I have 2 backup issues with one particular profile.

1) 18 files are skipped. The same ones every time. The explanation is "In Both. File sizes same." However, my settings are "Source overwrites destination always"

2) I don't know if this is the right place to bring up the second issue, but maybe I can get some advice? I moved my Indexing folder location ff my system drive to the My Documents, which is on a separate partition. The scan results with "Scan failed (5): Access is denied".

So it looks like I cant backup or restore these files? I'm mostly curious about what I would have to do in the case I had to restore that My Documents folder. Rebuilding that Index is a time consuming exercise that I would like to avoid.

Look again at the 'case' for which you have chosen the option "Source overwrites destination always" - take note of the conditions for which this Action will be executed (the Help has a longer, better-worded version - "When there is a file (with the same name and in the same directory) that is both in the source and the destination but their contents [or properties] are not the same")

Your situation ('files exist on each side and they match') is not covered by this setting because the files are the same (insofar as you have told SB to compare/crosscheck). There is no user-definable setting for 'what to do if corresponding files on each side match', because that Action is hardwired as 'Skip' (as correctly performed/logged).

There is no per-file setting that amounts to 'files are the same each side: copy anyway', because
a) Why would you want to? Given that
b) it would represent a pointless performance hit

I'm not clear which folder you have moved off your system-drive but if this folder is part of the system, you may have upset Windows when you did so. There is a KB article about 'Access Denied' but it is likely not something anyone can help you with remotely (it is problematic enough when you can see the various security settings, impossible when you cannot). You may need to seek specialist local assistance.

Hi cliffhanger,

I don't quite understand what you are referring to about "case".

"There is no per-file setting that amounts to 'files are the same each side: copy anyway', because
a) Why would you want to? Given that
b) it would represent a pointless performance hit"

Well, I agree, but I guess you assume I have altered a setting in some way to cause what looks to me as some sort of aberration. I've been using SB for years. I try to keep it simple, so I.m not sure what "conditions" you're referring to. This is the first time I've seen this type of behavior.

By "case" I meant one of the Decision rules on the Decisions-Files settings page - specifically, the rule in the top subsection which includes the Action (option) 'Source overwrites Destination always', which you said you have set. This 'case' is meant to apply as per my quote from the Help (in short, 'files on both sides with same path\name but whose properties do not match')

Originally, I construed your OP to the effect that you seemed to be expecting this Decision ('Source overwrites Destination always') to be performed whether or not such a pair of files had properties which matched, and I was trying to explain this was not the case if their properties* matched (they would be skipped). From your 2nd post, I now believe you were expecting these Source files to be copied over corresponding Dest files precisely because their properties did not match already (??)

If so, then I now think what is happening may be related to other settings on Decisions-Files, specifically the last subsection of Decisions-Files (which controls 'special cases', and overrides subsection-1 if they arise) > >

Are these 18 files by any chance all zero byte files? If the default setting (Skip) remains in place then it would only need the manifestation of some zero-byte files in the scope of your profile to eventually trigger them being Skipped by the default setting of case-4 (and logged as such). Bear in mind all zero-byte files by definition have identical contents, so may trigger section-4 rule instead of section-1. You wouldn't need to change any settings - the simple appearance in the scope of your profile will likely begin to trigger the Skipping action by default (once the files have been copied to the backup by a previous run, the 'present each side' aspect will trigger which section/rule handles it).

There's another possibility that may trigger something similar. Are the 18 files all normal (>0 bytes) but with names that differ only by case (THIS <> This and so on)? For complex reasons I won't take up space with this aspect now (unless/until you confirm case is a factor), I don't think the possibility the issue is being triggered by files with same name/different case files is very high.

* whatever you configured to profile to check; by default this is LastModified & Size but other options can be switched in, for example checking contents (hashing)

AAAggghh!!!
I've been using SB Pro for maybe a decade, and I too suddenly have multiple 'In Both. File sizes same.' errors. +

I just want to MIRROR selected files 100% from my DESKTOP to my LAPTOP.
The DESKTOP files are 100% current.
I want the LAPTOP to be 100% identical for selected files.

The techie musings about what might or might not cause this error require an intimate familiarity with not only the SB menus, but the syntax of how SB makes decisions NEVER ANSWERED THE QUESTION.

Please provide a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 menu of exactly what steps, where, using exactly the menu options built in SB to make this happen.
thank you.
