Hi, we've just uploaded new beta versions of the service and console. So this new version will use the thread and queue settings you have.

I'd recommend:

- Increasing the maximum queue size to at least 120, and maybe even 240. That will ensure that it can cope with all the clients.

- 150 threads is probably too high. It shouldn't need to be more than 120, and can probably be much lower, e.g. 50.

Thought I'd give you some info on how things have been going since updating to the latest version.

As per your instruction the threads value was set to 120, queue length to 240.

Before the update, pagefile use was around 79 Mbyte, and number of handles varying between 350-360. Threads constant at 20.

After the update (on thursday 20th), no freezes so far.
Pagefile use grew to around 20-21Mbyte and continues to vary around that value; handles varying between 240 and 260, and threads constant at 29.

I'm not too worried, since the changes we first made seemed to solve the problem; and things are looking even better after the new version.

I think so.
My colleague says there was an issue this monday/tuesday, but I'm not sure whether the service froze and had to be restarted or if he simply had problems connecting to the service and restarted it because of that. I was out of the office at the time and don't know for sure what happened.
Although the service was restarted, I can't see anything suspicuous right before or after the restart.
We'll keep watching and see what happens.

Ok, the service has frozen once again.
149 accounts, running 3-6 profiles each.

The service froze on friday October 5th around 20:00 and 22:00.
The response time of the service became pretty steady betwee 50-52msec (befor the freeze varying between 50-200 msec).
Pagefile usage froze at 73 633 792 KByte; number of threads became constant at 35# and number of handles also constant att 458#.

As mentioned earlier, these are the current settings:
Max no. of threads: 120,
Max queue lenght: 240;
Max number of sessions: -1

I simply restarted the service now, do you have any recommendations on how to change the values to possibly avoid further freezes?

Are you using 64-bit Windows (for the server)?

no, unfortunately it's a 32bit XP pro machine at the moment.
It will however be moved to a proper server in a while.

We've uploaded new versions of the service & console:

http://www.2BrightSparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe
http://www.2BrightSparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe

If you experience lock-up issues please send us the debug.txt file before you restart the service. It's critically important you copy the debug.txt file before rebooting or restarting.

The debug.txt file is usually stored in C:\ProgramData\SBMService folder along with the database files, but it could be different if you're on XP etc. A search of the drive should reveal its location.

IMPORTANT

This version updates the users database table. In previous versions the users password was stored in clear text, which is not a sensible thing to do. This new version will now store only the hashed passwords. So when the service is first run it will modify the table and hash the passwords. You shouldn't notice anything different (users will have the same passwords etc) but in case there is a problem a backup of the users database is automatically made before it does the conversion.

Is this version 64-bit only?
I get an error when installing to 32bit XP: "Internal Error: Cannot install files to 64-bit locations on this version of Windows"

Oops. We've uploaded a new version that fixes this (I've tested it on Windows XP 32-bit to be sure). The installer will install a 64-bit version on 64-bit versions of Windows, else it will install the 32-bit version.
