Backup files are jumbled and mis-spelt.

Postby oobackup » Wed Apr 04, 2012 4:19 pm

My first backup was of a very large folder called 'Data' which contains two folders 'A' and 'B'. Each of these contains numerous folders.
Checking the external hard disc, the main folder 'Data' does not appear, folders 'A' and 'B' are there but several sub-folders of 'A' and 'B' are also listed. Why?

My second backup was of a folder called PMAL and appeared on the hard disc as MAL. Why?

Many thanks.

I can see what has happened.
Any folder containing other folders is not shown on the external hard disc. Only the first level sub-folders are shown, and are inter-filed.

How do I keep the backed-up first level folders showing on the external hard disc?
Thanks.

Use/specify a wrapping folder in the Destination. For example, if you want to back up the contents (only) of the Source

X:\desired-folder\

to Y: drive, set your Destination as

Y:\

If you want to replicate the containing folder (\desired-folder\) on the Destination, simply set the Destination to

Y:\desired-folder\

Bear in mind you do not have to use the same name - you could set it to

Y:\backup_of_desired-folder\

if you wanted. This is by design, for maximum flexibility. For example, you can back up (with separate profiles)

I:\Pictures\
J:\Photos\

both into into

Z:\Images\

if you wanted to (that is, merge the two sets of contents).

PS: SyncBack will create any folders for you that don't actually exist, such as

Y:\desired-folder\

in the above example. You should therefore be careful when typing them in, because if you mis-type the name of an existing folder, it will create the folder that you did type, and copy stuff there instead. (And if you mis-type a Source folder, it will create it, then report it is empty/nothing to copy - and so on)
