Automatic backup when files change?

Postby kenatsun » Thu Feb 09, 2012 1:23 am

I need an FTP backup app that can be set up to automatically run a profile immediately whenever a file in the source is changed (or created or deleted or moved). Can any version(s) of SyncBack do that?

~ Thanks!

PS ~ I tried to post this question earlier today, and apparently failed. If this is a duplicate, please forgive.

Hi

I've deleted your original post (yes, there were two) as it actually had less info anyway. But this one is still a little vague, in that you haven't said whether the FTP server is the Source or the Destination?

If the Source is FTP, then no. The Windows API we invoke to notify us of changes only works with devices under Windows' control.

If it is the Destination, and the Source is a Windows disk or network resource (that is, not a NAS or Linux, etc), then yes, SE & Pro do. Free 30-day evaluation is available, and they install in parallel to the freeware (provided you let them: use the default install folders for an easy life), so do not uninstall the freeware until/unless you decide to upgrade, and have completed same.

Notes:

* SE & Pro can detect changes on both Source and/or Destination, but only if the Windows API we leverage can (thus, not FTP, probably not non-Windows networked devices, and definitely not any of the extra resources Pro supports)

* SE/Pro need to be running (Started With Windows, or manually) for this functionality to work. If you close SE/Pro, it will stop monitoring. Changes are not 'banked', but any future trigger should spot any changed files - that were previously missed while SE/Pro were not running - c/o normal scanning > > >

* this change-detection acts as a trigger only: the profile will then do a full scan (as though you clicked Run). This can actually be useful given that changes are not 'banked' (see previous note)

* this will also trigger on temp files. You can filter them out from being actually copied, but not from triggering a scan.

Thanks, Dave, for your very clear answer & explanation! =D>

BTW, yes, my source is my Windows machine and my destination is an FTP site.
