exe compile

Postby howlncat » Fri Jan 22, 2010 3:49 pm

The result of an exe compile produces a screen that has a Menu, an Outliner and Icons for History, Print, Find and Help. How do I get rid of these. At the most a Chapter index is needed but not in the form of the Outliner. This screen that is presented to the reader just does not look like a book and contains commands that a publisher/author does not want.

Another point is security. A better explanation of your security features is needed. This is important. No publisher/author wants his work copied, printed or in any manner reproduced.

Of the many ebook compilers I have evaluated there are five still in contention. Presentation of the book to the reader and security are of prime concern.

Thank You

I raised this matter via a support ticket. The response was that they will be giving the option via 'settings' to control what is displayed in an .exe publication. Hope this helps.

They do seem to be very responsive to suggestions.

exe compile

Thanks JMaho. I checked the v numbers. That does not seem to be incorporated yet. To me a ebook should look like a book, not a pdf of html. To this end Desktop Author and Exebook Self Publisher do that. I will see what happens.

Hi, thanks for your comments and observations about InfoHesiveEP. I understand how some users would like the .exe eBooks InfoHesiveEP produces to be more akin to the paper book.

InfoHesiveEP publishes to multiple formats, including a self contained Windows .exe eBook that requires no other software to open. Some formats that InfoHesiveEP publishes to like .HTML and .ePub display differently depending on the host devices (iPhone, eReader, Internet browser etc.). Publishers are therefore aware that digital publications will not look the same on each platform. That's something to recognize is different about digital publications. The presentation of text and media is very important, but so too is the willingness to be flexible about the presentation of that digital content.

We have developed InfoHesiveEP so that authors and publishers can easily publish to many different formats without having to make major editorial revisions for each format. There may be some author/publishers who wish to restrict their publications to exe eBooks that are only viewable on PCs, and that appear to more closely resemble their real-world paper counterparts. Digital publications and eBooks are however far more fluid in their style. The number of hardware eBook readers on the market are exploding and each have their own way of presenting content, including the latest Apple iPad which uses the ePub format - one supported by InfoHesiveEP.

Turning to security, the author/publisher wants their content reproduced but many do not want their content pirated. Many other publishers however very much want their publications copied as much as possible as they want to see their message viewed by a large audience. It all depends on the purpose of the publication (fiction, brochure, marketing material, reference materials etc.).

When security is concerned there's always a trade off. We want to share content with our audience, and yet some authors understandably want to control how that audience uses or shares that content. Some publishers have turned to Digital Rights Management, others use proprietary hardware and software to lock publications.

InfoHesiveEP lets you lock topics and articles so they are not editable or viewable depending on whether the user enables the trial version under the WorkSpace security settings. It is also possible to password protect InfoHesiveEP publications to restrict their distribution.

No matter what measures are taken to protect a publication from copying, if you can view or hear an author's work, be it on an iPhone, PC, Internet browser, or other media, that work can be reproduced. At its most basic this takes the form of recalling the content in your mind, and reproducing that in another format. Digital platforms make reproducing media relatively simple for those who do not view copying as stealing and have the tools to do it - even when there are significant barriers to copying material. There are of course methods that discourage copying and assert copyright, but the plain truth is, if a work is published, it has the potential to be copied illegally.

I do not copy digital content, whether it be a DVD, software, or an image on a website. If I want to share or use content I review the terms of the author/publisher and abide by them. I pay when asked. Illegally copying content is a major reason so many stop producing and sharing their work. The author either freely shares or charges for work they produce - that's their choice, and to not abide by that choice is illegal. I accept however that the vast majority of Internet users routinely copy digital content and do not view their actions as unacceptable because "everybody does it", it's easy, and it's unlikely anyone will find out.

The only 100% way of ensuring a work is not pirated is to not to publish it. Given however those using InfoHesiveEP want to publish their content, we need to provide the author/publisher with tools that provide them greatest choice of securing their publications. Some will want no security so their work can be distributed to the widest audience, others will want to secure their work so they can more easily generate income from their efforts as they reduce piracy.

If you use InfoHesiveEP to publish to some formats like HTML, you will have limited choices to secure that content. You could restrict the HTML's publication to a select audience by password protecting access to it on a secure website, but you would also limit your audience reach. If you publish to an InfoHesiveEP .exe eBook you have more control over the security of your content as you can lock topics and articles, provide a trial version that is not readable after a certain number of days until a serial number is entered, or can only be read after inputting a password.

To summarize, InfoHesiveEP will allow you to publish to a wide variety of digital formats, and to choose security settings according to your needs. For those who want eBooks to be presented in a way that appears more like a traditional paper book, I hope this post will encourage further thought about what an eBook is and how digital publications are fundamentally different than their real world namesakes. The digital publication is the next evolution to publishing as real world books were to the stone tablet.

Kind Regards,
