Cannot decrypt files after restoring machine

Postby humecsupport » Wed Feb 18, 2009 7:08 pm

A user had EncryptOnClick installed on her machine to encrypt some sensitive files. We had to redo her machine to clear up some errors. So we did a image backup with Ghost and she also backed up her files to her personal space on our Netware server.

Now as we have put those file back, reinstalled it, and she has tried to open them, some open with her password, some do not. She says she has used her same password for all. Could moving the files around or extracting them from an image caused the password to change or become scrambled?

Any help appreciated.

Hi

I suppose it's possible (anything's possible...)

But here's something to try, though. EncryptOnClick files are actually renamed Zip files, although they're Zip64 archives, so Windows itself can't read them direct (even 64-bit versions - typical MS ). Free utilities like 7Zip can, though.

If you download & install 7Zip, you can then use the right-click option and Open Archive, which (if the file is not completely scrambled) should open a recognisable Zip window with the file(s) listed. (This is Zip standard - the file names aren't encrypted, only the file contents are). If you then try and open a file and it asks you for a password, and the expected password doesn't work, I think you can probably guess the likelihood of file corruption leaving a file that works all the way up to that point and then stops. Much more likely Caps Lock was on, or there is some other typo involved.

In case you were thinking of asking, no, we have no way of unlocking an EOC file (Zip64 archive) by any 'back doors'.
