Move specific folder

Postby myrsloken » Sat Jun 18, 2011 1:36 pm

Hi

I would like to know if it is possible to move several folders that has partly the same name i.e

xxx_PQxxxx
xxxx_PQxxxxx

and some being

xxxx_LA_xxxxx
xxxx_LA_xxxx

_PQ and _LA being the common info shared.

so that i can have them in different folders than what they are already.

Hi

Not in SyncBack freeware (Move is not supported at all).

The commercial versions (SE/Pro) support Move, and also have suitable Filtering. So, you would set your Source to a common parent folder of all the folders in question.

You would then set the Destination path to be where you want the folders and contents Moved to - bearing in mind any relative path between your Source string and the actual locations of the found folders will be replicated in the Destination path you set.

That is to say, if the Source was C:\thisname\ and Destination X:\thatname\ was specified, and a folder C:\thisname\othername\123_PQ456\ existed, a folder called \othername\ would be created on the Destination to Move the folder \123_PQ456\ (and its contents) into. (Resulting in X:\thatname\othername\123_PQ456\<contents>). And so on.

You would need Filtering set up ('Files/folders TO copy') as

*\
*\*_PQ*\*.*
*\*_LA*\*.*

(probably - I cannot see your file-set from here: do not omit that first entry - see the Help on Filtering for why, and for further help on Filtering if you need it).

Then set the profile to Move instead of Copy as applicable. And do a Simulated Run to check / monitor the Differences screen closely, and so on.

If you have further questions, please state the version you're using (SE or Pro), and I'll then move this topic to that forum. It's completely off-topic for this Ideas forum ("to post ideas for new products or discuss things that are not related to 2BrightSparks products") but appreciate you found it hard to choose between the three likely SB forums until you had at least part of the answer.

I just remembered the above will Move the files inside those folders, but not the folders themselves (SyncBackSE/Pro work at the file-level; folders are just created where necessary (to put copied files in!), and left undisturbed where not).

There is an option to go back and delete empty folders on Source afterwards, but this will affect any empty folders inside the scope of your Source string (not only those from which files were just Moved, and which are now empty because of that)
