FindOnClick and searching within compressed files

Postby ggabrio » Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:33 am

Hi,
is FindOnClick able to search for a file within compressed files (ZIP)?
I tried it but he did not work. Maybe I miss some parameter or option?
Thanks for any suggestion.

No, that's not supported. Bear in mind the contents are not stored in plain form in a Zip, but encoded - as mentioned here:

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I understand the reason and this seems reasonable to me.
Any suggestion on how to search within ZIP files? Do I need some special utility or program? I usualy create compressed folder using Windows, not any other product.

Google? A quick Google I just tried suggests Windows' Search in XP does it by default with no way to turn it off (except a 3rd-party solution). I haven't tried - either way. Another hit was a forum post (not here - elsewhere) asking why Windows' Search in Vista was not finding stuff in Zips, even though 'they were in an indexed location'. The post was unresolved. And my own Windows 7 does not find files inside Zips (not even the name, much less the contents). I found an option in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > Search tab to include compressed files, but it doesn't seem to work, even if I told it to search non-indexed locations. I even made a fresh Zip with an example target file in, and left it in the search location as 'bait'. Nada.

But I did see the occasional listing for 3rd-party utilities that claimed to (and my AV does, including scanning the content - or so it claims - so it's obviously possible).

In any case, it's now outside the bounds of OnClick Help, sorry. But good luck!
