Server Mirroring - Perfornance

Postby efilippou » Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:46 am

Hello,

I have two servers, in different locations, with a 1-2 mbps dsl connection. I want to have a backup of the main server files to the backup server (the backup server to always be an exact copy of the main server), with changes reflected every half an hour.

The files are 400.000 in 10.000 folders
Daily there are updates in about 500-1000 files and there are about 300 new files on the original server.

My problem is that it takes ages (hours) for the script I built (Mirror Left type) to check the changes.
My servers are Windows 2008R2 64bit with IIS
I own 2 V5 SyncBackSE licenses

I would assume for the sake of performance, there would be an option to have the software on the main server that will provide to the client the list of files, and then the client would read this file and decide what files to copy.
Is there such option or do I have to read each file through FTP?
What would be the fastest way for such operation (reading 400.000 files in less than 5 minutes)?

Thanks, Emmanouil Filippou

Use Fast Backup (and do not Rescan), using the traditional (non-archive bit) method. On run-2 and later (assuming you do not Rescan) it will read the database (that it built on run-1 as a Fast Backup) instead of the Destination. Very fast...of course, you still need to scan the Source.

Make sure you read the caveats about Fast Backup, especially the part where no other person or process must change the files on the Destination except that single profile (otherwise it will be unaware of the changes: you can lose data that way if the Destination contents are not what the profile thinks they are)

Note also that you cannot use the archive-bit variant of Fast Backup and expect a Mirror to work (except on a Rescan). The Help on Fast Backup explains why not. Bear in mind also that Fast Backup can be leveraged for other things (incremental and differential backups) but you apparently don't need those, so should not experiment with (or be confused by) the other available settings on that page

PS: There's no 'remote agent' functionality that you could run on the remote side to provide a list. But if the client side creates and maintains its own list (database), and you don't interfere with the contents of the remote side yourself (and nothing else does), this method achieves much the same thing.

BTW, you should note that technical support for versions of SyncBackSE and SyncBackPro prior to version 6 has officially ceased. Any technical support given is provided at our sole discretion and should not be treated as a precedent in any way. We reserve the right to discontinue any dialogue regarding unsupported versions, either for a current ticket/post, future tickets/posts or both. No further updates, fixes, or changes will be made to unsupported versions of SyncBackSE or SyncBackPro.
