Windows 7/64 run as different user fails ..

Postby gpsmikey » Fri Jul 20, 2012 9:11 pm

Greetings - Windows 7/64, SyncBackPro 6.1.1.22 (latest). I have a number of profiles that I normally (XP Pro) run as a different user to backup several folders to a Linux machine (Ubuntu). I have a user called "archiver" (password protected) that I use to run the profiles - this means that other users can view the files in the backup directories, but they can't modify/delete them. Works fine under XP. Windows 7/64 (same machine, dual boot) - if I "run as different user" (shift+right_click the profile on the desktop), give it the user name/password, it fails with "permission denied". If I switch user on W7 to "archiver", I can view/write to the destination directory on the Linux machine as expected. Any idea what "intuitively obvious" setting I am missing in this deal since the user "archiver" can write to the destination folder on the Linux machine as expected (and the same profile works fine when run as "archiver" when running XP Pro) ?

Forgot to add - on both "machines", the user "archiver" has admin rights and has the same password.

Some additional follow-up info on this:
- if I turn "debug" on, when I run the profile from the shortcut on the desktop as me (either directly or from "run as different user" using my credentials), it appears to run (although any file writes fail as expected).

- Both a debug file in the Users\Mikey\AppData\Local\2BrightSparks\SyncBackPro as well as the expected logfile in D\SyncBackPro_LOGS are created.

- the alternate user "archiver" also has admin rights (like my account)

- if I try to run as the user "archiver", it does not create a debug file (either in my AppData path OR in the archiver AppData path (although the settings.ini file in the archiver AppData path seems to get a timestamp at the time I tried to run it.

- I don't see any obvious errors in the Windows 7 Event logs

- Tried turning the UAC all the way down (and reboot) with no change

- since I don't see any debug file or regular log file being created, I would assume that the SyncBackPro profile never runs, however, it is not obvious why it is not running.

- I have another slideshow program (Proshow Producer) also on the desktop and if I select it and use "run as different user" with the archiver credentials, it does run although it reports that it is in trial mode (can't read the registration info from the registry would be a first guess), but it does run and looking in the process table it does show it running as "archiver"

Any enlightenment would be much appreciated (this is a relatively clean install of Windows 7/64).

Re: Windows 7/64 run as different user fails .. SOLVED

OK, woopie :D Solved it Foolish me had assumed that when I ran a profile from my account with another users credentials, it would run that profile with my configuration of SyncBackPro. Wrong - it runs it with the configuration of SyncbackPro in the other users account. I had set SyncBack to use a common directory for the profiles, but I had done it AFTER importing the profiles from the XP partition. KB article 49 "How do I move where my profiles settings are stored" gave the correct answer. Once I deleted the existing profiles, made sure both instances (mine and archiver) were set to use the common profile location, run as different user now runs as expected. It certainly would have been nice if somewhere there had been some sort of error message though that it could not find the profile or something (pref. in the assigned log file location).
