Sites and software

Postby mickyj » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:38 am

There are countless web sites and more software available than you can shake a stick at. In this post I just want to mention a few sites that I visit regularly, and software that I use all the time. This is mostly related to personal usage and not for business. For business use I?d have to say I spend nearly all my time using Delphi, answering and sending email using Outlook, and the rest of my time on these forums and the support site.

Music: I?ve been using Winamp for as long as I can remember, and I spend most of the day listening to Shoutcast streams.

Searching: Google for Internet, Copernic for desktop (because it?s easier to use it with SyncBackSE, and it works well).

VOIP: Skype. Because we are spread over two countries 2BrightSparks saves a fortune on phone bills by using this free software.

Internet: Firefox and Thunderbird for RSS/Usenet

Spam: SpamPal. It?s not the easiest to use or configure, but it works and works well.

Web sites: Here are just a few of the ones I visit most regularly:

Slashdot
Astronomy Picture of the Day
Mark?s Sysinternals Blog
The Daily Show
Toms Hardware
HardOCP

Do you know any real gems that we should all know about?

I was just informed of this little gem by a friend last week.
http://www.pandora.com

It allows you to find NEW music that is close to the sorts of artists and songs you already like. it works a bit like a radio station, so no rewinds. Heck its free and works very well in my opinion.

cheers

A couple of programs I like and use every day are

Deskpins
A freeware program to make any window stay on top, works well

Dexpot
Virtual Desktops
Freeware program that gives up to 20 Virtual Desktops, works as good if not better than most paid programs of this type.

Hi,

First of all I apologise if this is in the wrong forum/medium, but I couldn't see anything else that would 'fit' my post as well.

I recently bought syncbackSE and am more pleased with it than any other program I have ever bought. It's reliable, has loads of options and looks great too. Simply fantastic.

I am however having difficulty finding an equivilent download manager (they all seem to be buggy, filled with spyware or both) And also, often the developer doesn't want to know about any problems, unlike 2brightsparks who have an excellent website, tutorials and the option of help if required. (haven't had to use any, the program is so good)

After I had used syncback for a while I decided to check out the website fully and see what other products they sold and I was surprised to see synchback was the only one. And I started wondering if 2brightsparks would be considering making a download manager? I would certainly buy it.

Hi, we're hoping to release other software for sale, but at the moment making more improvements and changes to SyncBack takes pretty much all of our time. You just wouldn't believe how many more things there are still to add to it  I know we're going to get lynched if we don't add certain features

I used to use download managers myself in the dim and distant past, but they have a habit of corrupting downloads (as you've probably discovered). The last one I used was Download Accelerator. They've got a paid for product so I guess they'll fix any issues you have with it.
