Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
I am using Syncback to replace files between 2 2008R2 Servers, every night i get a failed report stating the filenames were too long on some files. What is the limit?
Also, i constantly see 'access is denied' messages on the System Volume Information.
How do i resolve these issues?

For length issues see here: http://www.2brightsparks.com/help/index ... rticle=260
For 'Access Denied', see here: http://www.2brightsparks.com/help/index ... rticle=205 - with System Volume Information, you're probably best just de-selecting the folder. Windows does not want anyone in there... (it contains the System Restore data, IIRC)

Does syncback pro help with the access is denied error?

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
See the 'Bypassing NTFS Security' section in the KB article 205 for a mode you can try in SE/Pro that does not exist in the freeware. But it's not guaranteed to work, in which case you either need to change the permissions on the folder\files, and/or the privileges of the user. Or, stop trying to copy the problem files altogether. That is, as per the article 205 and our previous reply.
Free 30-day trials are available
http://www.2brightsparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe
http://www.2brightsparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe
The differences are here
http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/compare.html
Do not uninstall the freeware or you will defeat the auto-profile import feature. SE imports from the freeware, Pro from SE, so if you want to try both - see below - install in the obvious order. If you only want to try Pro, you can uninstall SE afterwards
The SE & Pro versions can be installed in parallel with the freeware and/or each other. Do not install any 'model' to the same folder as another (just accept the default folders for an easy life). The SE & Pro versions will uninstall cleanly if you decide not to purchase. If you do decide to purchase, the serial number will unlock whichever version you decide to license. There is no need to uninstall the 'trial' and download a 'registered' version. Entering the serial number converts the former to the latter. Any version you decide not to keep will uninstall without affecting the version you do keep (if any).
(Note: any auto-profile import will not include the Schedules (to avoid double-triggering). If you want to switch your Scheduled profiles over, you need to delete the Schedules from the version where they were created and re-create them from the version where you want them)

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
I am trying to sync a whole volume between 2 servers.
For example, copy all of D: on server1 to drive E: on server 2. Is there no guaranteed workaround? These are just data volumes also, no system files.

'System Volume Information' (which you cited way back) is system files. The clue is in the name

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
Dave,
my source is listed as 10.1.1.1\D$ to destination 10.1.1.2\E$
Perhaps i should move all the files on the D drive underneath a parent folder called Shares. And then adjust the source and destination on the syncback profile to
10.1.1.1\Shares to 10.1.1.2\Shares
Would this solve the access is denied error since i'm not copying the entire volume now?

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
Given that I can't see the files or their permissions versus your privileges, no idea. But trying to copy System Volume Information will fail with Access Denied (as will trying to move it) unless you change the security on the folder. Try looking inside it to see what I mean. Otherwise, as per KB 205. There is no magic solution, sorry.

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
Is there any benefit in copying or backing up the system volume info??
What could it be used for or how would you use it if you needed to do a recovery?
Should it always be added to the exclude list if copying a complete drive?

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
Probably not. It contains System Restore information, and the usage is perhaps best described as 'classified'. It's certainly outside the scope of this forum.
Bear in mind that none of our products is designed to back up an entire system drive. They are file-based data backup utilities. The result of such an attempt almost certainly will not boot, nor could you Restore it over a working system.

How do we add these files to the exclusion list?

Re: Filename Too Long/Access is Denied Messages
Given that you can't exclude at the file-level in the freeware, with difficulty...(in the commercial versions, you can de/select files, in the freeware, only folders: entirely different tree components are used). Why not simply de-select the System Volume Information folder (which, if you read back in this ticket, we already suggested about a year ago)?
