Sync fron NAS to NAS: Destination remains empty

Postby pnieuwkamp » Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:56 am

Hi,

I've got two Lacie Ethernet disks (running Windows XP Embedded, their default OS), joined to the domain. I can access both the source and destination folders without any problem whatsoever (this includes creating files and folders on the destination). Source has about 1.5 TB of data, destination is empty.

I want the first one to be mirrored to the other one every night, so I installed SB V3.2.21.0 (nl_NL). Or actually, I just upgraded, as I already have some profiles running. Profiles I'm starting to doubt because of this issue.

I created a profile, from \\UNC-path-A to \\UNC-path-B, and selected to include all subfolders and -files. I took the Simple task 'Backup the source directory files, including all its sub-directories', and from the Advanced-tab I choose 'What to do if a file is in the destination but not in the source: Delete file from destination'.

Seems pretty straightforward to me, so I hit 'Ok' and then 'Run'. Half a second after that: Done.

That was amazing, how did SB get 1.5 TB of data over a 100mbit link in half a second? :o Well, it didn't, the destination remains empty.

How do I fix this?

It sounds like it's maybe pointing at the wrong folder in one or both paths (e.g, because of typos). By default, SyncBack will silently create any such folders, which will of course be empty. This includes UNC paths, providing the path includes a valid servername & sharename, e.g. with

\\ValidServer\ValidShare\MissingSubFolder\

the MissingSubFolder will silently be created. The fact that no Differences screen was displayed strongly suggests it's pointing at 'no files'. Check the log? Also settings on the Advanced tab (make sure nothing is set to Skip that shouldn't be). Also check the Source and Destination for new (empty) folders...

Your 'no files' remark made me check the profiles (and indeed, all profiles) again, and for some reason (and as most of the profiles have been there for quite a while, there's no way for me to know if it was any of my coworkers, myself, or some sort of vortex in the time/space continuum ) there was this tiny easily missed '*' in the 'Directories NOT to copy'-filter

I guess the network will be busy tonight....

Btw, is there another way to chain profiles other than 'Run after profile' -> "C:\Program Files (x86)\2BrightSparks\SyncBack\SyncBack.exe" -m "Lacie2Lacie-data" (or, as that's the original goal, to select multiple shares to backup on the same server to the same destination, treating shares as directories? Right now I've got a profile per share, and chained them to make sure they don't run concurrently), either on the Freeware or either of the paid versions?

Yes, filtering out all files would do it

Make a group and put them in it? Making sure not to use the 'parallel' option...

In the Pro version, you can install a script (provided - called AllDrives.vbs) that can address all drives on a system (including any mapped drives). But UNC paths are not supported (also, mapped drives don't work when Scheduled). So basically if you want UNC paths and/or Scheduling, multiple profiles in a group are the way to go

I hadn't yet encountered the option to make a group (though it was mentioned in the forums, I usually copy previous profiles as I want to do more of the same) so I thought it was part of the paid versions.

For anyone left wondering, it's under 'Profiles -> New', slightly counter to my expectations (as it's not a profile per se) yet still logical in retrospect :P

Thanks for your support :)
